The literacy process begins in early childhood
Here at RED HOUSE, literacy is understood as a process that involves many skills that have to be developed from Toddler age, and that gradually result in the understanding and use of the alphabetic writing system.
Attention, memory, visual and auditory acuity, vocabulary expansion, narrative construction, and motor development are some of them. As we are an international and bilingual school, until K4, students are encouraged to speak English primarily, expanding their capacity for communication, and understanding the particularities of this language.
From K5 onwards, they will have systematic contact with the Portuguese language for 50 minutes a day and will be able to better elaborate the relationship between reading and writing in both languages.
The literacy process will continue for many years to come, since it involves the particularities of both the writing system itself and of the individuality of each one involved in it.
