Students of the elective “School Newspaper” class launch first edition of Red News
Starting this year, students in the Higienópolis Campus‘ Final Years of Elementary School have the opportunity to participate in the new “School Newspaper” elective class , which promotes a newspaper writing experience. In weekly classes, they feel like real life reporters and learn creative writing techniques.
“In this elective class we were able to develop several learnings with students. Besides developing creative writing skills, they write articles, do research, as well as information analysis, information literacy, and critical analysis. Finally, one of the most important things they learn is informational responsibility, which makes them aware of the power and responsibility of information dissemination,” explains Professor Fabiano Gomes, who is responsible for the classes.
Fabiano is also a librarian at the Higienópolis Campus and has accumulated experience as a writer, columnist and editor of journalism vehicles, as well as creating creative content for blogs and brands such as Google. The elective classes are held in the library, which is transformed into a real newsroom.
Original content
All the content produced is original and authored by the students. They are also responsible for choosing the topics and editorials, getting fully involved with the development of the stories, for which the topics are open.
“They are encouraged to choose any topic that interests them. At the beginning of each edition we do a brainstorming session in which I talk to each one about the theme they want to approach. Then we analyze what angle each student will take on the subject,” says Fabiano.
Red News’ first issue
The elective’s final product is a newspaper called “Red News”, which had its first issue published in April. The content is all in English.
Among the stories, there is coverage of all the new features and renovations made at the school from 2022 to 2023, information about House Competition, Extracurricular Activities, and the Student Council, as well as recommendations containing reviews of TV series, books, and music; sports reports, interviews, poems, articles about science, technology, and behavior.
