RED HOUSE promotes a lecture on nonviolent communication
On June 21st, RED HOUSE promoted an online lecture on non-violent communication and education with Elisama Santos, psychoanalyst and author of the bestsellers “Educação Não-Violenta” (Non-Violent Upbringing), “Por Que Gritamos” (Why We Yell) and “Conversas Corajosas” (Brave Conversations).
The entire school community was able to attend the lecture, bringing together parents, students, teachers, and other school employees.
The initiative is part of the Socioemotional Skills Development Project to support families, students, and employees regarding mental health.
Nonviolent Communication
Nonviolent communication, also known as CNV in Brazil, or compassionate communication, is a method developed by American psychologist and writer Marshall Rosenberg between the 1960s and 1970s to resolve conflicts and promote partnership and cooperative relationships by using effective, empathetic communication and avoiding violence.
Marshall Rosenberg published his studies in a book that became world-renowned under the title “Nonviolent Communication – Techniques for Enhancing Personal and Professional Relationships”.
He has worked holding workshops all over the world and his method has been applied in factories, schools, poor communities, and countries at war with serious political conflicts such as Ireland, Croatia, Nigeria, and Rwanda.
Who is Elisama Santos?
Besides being a successful author in the area, Elisama has a postgraduate degree in Mental Health from PUC-PR and is a parenting educator from the Positive Discipline Institute, USA.
She is also a TED Speaker and host of the podcast “Vai Passar” (It Shall Pass, a Spotify original) and of the TV show “SAC Das Emoções” (Emotions Customer Service) from GNT channel, being one of the biggest references in non-violent upbringing and communication in Brazil.
Social-Emotional Project
Launched in 2022 with the intention of welcoming and assisting the post-pandemic school community with mental health issues, the RED HOUSE Socio-Emotional Skills Development Project continues and has eventually expanded.
The program was developed in partnership with Guilherme Polanczyk, MD, one of the most renowned child neuropsychiatrists in Brazil, who also held a lecture for parents and staff on the importance of family and school in caring for the mental and emotional health of children.
For students, a weekly class focused on the development of socioemotional skills was implemented, which is now part of the curriculum.
The action also included weekly meditation sessions with guided practice with Vanessa Barbosa and a presentation that brought together a show and a lecture for Children’s Upbringing with Elisa Gatti, the Musical Mother, who helps families to have a less stressful relationship with their children through creative songs.
